English Plus Rugby
Originating in England in the 19th Century, rugby is now a sport enjoyed around the world with over 6 million players worldwide.
In partnership with our sister company, PSA Academies, our English Plus Rugby Camp is perfect for boys and girls aged 12 to 16 who want to try rugby, improve their skills and develop English language skills alongside other like-minded rugby fans and is suitable for those with or without prior experience.
This 1-week rugby camp consists of 4 daily training sessions delivered in English supported by English language lessons and cultural excursions. The sessions will be broken up into smaller sessions focusing on different areas of athletic development, training and assessment such as game management and core skills. In the second week at Camp Pangbourne, students join our multi-activity programmes with the rest of our students on campus.
Delivering the course will be elite level coaches from PSA coaches who have a wealth of experience from all areas of game both domestically and internationally. At the end of the course, players will receive feedback by all coaches to improve and maximise their game as well as a player pack including training tops.

Accommodation at Pangbourne varies from single bedded rooms to small dorm rooms. We always have separate quarters for boys and girls and where possible place campers of a similar age in a room together. If you have any special requirements or would like to request to share with a friend, we will try to accommodate you, just let us know in advance.
Spend meal times with new friends in the huge dining hall where a selection of freshly cooked food is served at all mealtimes. Both hot and cold options are available in a wide range of cuisines and dietary requirements can be met when we are aware in advance. Our Camp Leaders eat their meals at the same time as campers to make sure everyone has had enough food and eating healthily.
This is a 2-week English language camp, students join our English Plus Rugby course in the first week and in the second week, will participate in our wide range of adventure activities whilst they complete their English language course. During the rugby course, players will spend 4 half days with our elite level coaches from PSA Academies focusing on the development of all rugby skills from areas on and off the field. Each morning will begin with a class-based High Performance Clinic after which players are out on the field for a core skills sessions, game management and assessments covering both attacking and defensive elements such as passing, kicking, rucking, tackling and decision making.
Our aim by the end of the week will be for players to have a better understanding of the game and learning of what it takes to be a rugby player on and off the field. Across the week, players will receive 8 hours of rugby training and assessment, 4 hours of athletic development, and 1.5 hours of class based High Performance Clinics. Players will need to bring sports kit with them, including football boots, gym trainers and a gumshield (players will not use full contact, there is an initiative for all young players to wear gumshields during training sessions in order to get used to wearing them).
A1 – B1 on CEFR Pathway Table
To benefit the most from our English course at Pangbourne, we recommend that children have at least one year of English experience before coming to camp. We offer a range of levels suitable for age and ability of 12 to 16 year olds ranging from Preliminary (A1) to Intermediate (B1). (link to CEFR page) English lessons at Xplore are totally different to school; firstly our class sizes are small, with a maximum of 16 children per class this allows focused integration with other learners and the teacher. We also make sure to utilise a range of teaching approaches suitable for a range of learners, this makes the classes really interactive and encourages learners to have fun whilst learning which can enhance development. At the end of the 2-week course, learners will complete an examination for the level they have been learning at. We will then receive a certificate from Anglia Examinations, which confirms your English level in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference. Classroom learning time per week is 20 hours and our class sizes are same with approximately 16 students per teacher. For students achieving a pass grade or higher for B1, they will receive an Ofqual approved certificate through Anglia Examinations partnership with AIM Awards.
During the 2-week programme, our staff will take all our campers on 3 organised day trip excursions. These fully supervised trips are the perfect way to spend the day off-campus with new friends – from day trips to big cities such London or Oxford to local towns like Windsor and Newbury. (3 excursions during 2-week programme – Wednesday, Saturday, Wednesday).
Care and Supervision
Our Camp Leaders are responsible for the pastoral care of all those in our care and ensure that everyone is sleeping well, eating well, joining in, making friends and having a great time. During free time, our teenagers are able to explore the campus with friends, whilst being supervised by their house parents.
Our camps are available to children from all over the world. Integration and immersion is central to how we operate as an organisation, and by encouraging lots of social interaction between different cultures and creating a diverse international community at camp, it can really develop every child’s self-confidence in communicating with others.
